INTERVIEW WITH BRIAN WRIGHT
BY STAFF CORRESPONDENT BRIAN
SMITH
(10.2.04)
The great Japanese Samurai, Miyamoto Musashi wrote “We must live
life in a way that we will not regret.” Brian “The Lion”
Wright lives his life in this way and continues to school his “pride”
of students with this inner discipline. He comes to the Saturday, November
13th Heavyweight Gladiators "King of the Gladiators" Professional
8-Man Heavyweight Tournament here in Milwaukee with diverse Karate experience
from around the world in conjunction with his battles in tournaments
held in Japan and as far away as Europe and Australia.
Brian Smith: What is your fighting style?
Brian “The Lion” Wright: "Full
Contact Karate although I have also trained in Traditional Karate, Muay
Thai, Ju Jitsu, Judo, and other notable martial arts."
B. Smith: What will be your strategy for the “King of the Gladiators"
Tournament? What do you consider your biggest weapon?
The Lion: "I plan on being in great shape
by training properly. I like to stick to what I do best. My biggest
weapons are my combinations and my low kick."
B. Smith: What do you know about your first round opponent, Horace
Craft?
The Lion: "I don’t really know much
about my opponent other than he has a boxing background. I’ll
show up prepared by training a little more with the boxers. No matter
what, I will give him respect. They all deserve respect."
B. Smith: How do you feel about K-1, Heavyweight Gladiators and other
8-man events?
The Lion: "I am used to tournaments like
this although I mostly compete as a middleweight. This is only my 2nd
Heavyweight fight. I was inspired by Andy Hug because he is the first
Karate guy I saw do well in the K-1 events. He was known as Mr. K-1.
After watching his fights, I realized that smaller guys can compete
against true heavyweights."
B. Smith: How did you get your name?
The Lion:" I got my name from my students.
Back in the day I used to have long hair and a thick beard. And because
of my aggressive come-straight-at-you fighting style, one of the students
one day said I look like the Lion King. We all laughed and my students
said that’s it. You found a name."
B. Smith: Why do you fight?
The Lion: "Some people like to fight for
the 1-on-1 competition, but for me, the 1-on-1 is ”Me-on-Me.”
I like to learn by testing myself. I may have lost a few fights on paper,
but I have never been knocked down, never been knocked out. To me the
battle is within."
