Jon Freidland Interview by Greg Kalikas GK: You will be making your Gladiator Fighting Series debut on October 21st, what’s going through your mind as we get closer to the fight? JF: "I’m a little nervous but also very excited to be fighting in my home town for the first time ever. I have fought all over the country but never in Wisconsin and I can’t wait to show the fans what I can do. I’m use to being the bad guy everywhere I have fought so it will be nice to have the crowd support me for once." GK: Do you feel added pressure fighting in your front of your home town fans? JF: "Yeah, especially when I think about all of the sacrifices my friends and family have made so I can fight and train. I really want to win for them so I feel a little pressure." GK: The growth of MMA and the Gladiator Fighting Series has been rapid in Wisconsin. What do you attribute to that? JF: "The sport is finally getting some positive publicity from the media and newspapers in this region. Before it was all about how brutal the MMA was but now people are realizing that we are athletes just like any other sport and MMA is legitimate just like football and baseball. It wasn’t like that before." GK: Will you try to keep things standing or do you prefer to take your opponents to the ground? JF: "I’m a ground fighter so I will try to bring my opponent into my territory. It doesn’t guarantee me a win but I am more comfortable on the ground. I’ve been training allot on my stand up with Duke (Roufus) and I hope it works out that we can stand and exchange strikes but I’m prepared for anything." GK: What’s your prediction for this fight? JF: "I try to visualize the way my fights will go but it usually does not work out that way but for this fight I see it going to the ground with me on the bottom. Hopefully I can pull out an armbar or triangle and win the fight. Win or lose my goal on the 21st is to put on a great show for the fans and make sure that I make BJJ look good."
