On Friday night, November 25th, King John Boxing presented "Season's Beatings" from the Winnipeg Convention Center. There were a couple of bright spots in the six bout card which was punctuated by the performance of Agostino DeNatale, Nathan Dorey, Wilson Rivera and Cody Hannah. DeNatale impressive in debut: The KO of the night and probably one of the most impressive debuts that the Winnipeg boxing scene has had in quite a while. Agostino "The Bull" DeNatale, whom previously was known only for his Muaythai skills, completely starched Dustin McVey at 17 seconds of the first round. McVey
was unable to beat the count. DeNatale goes to 1-0 while McVey's record
slips to 0-1.
A capacity crowd was on hand Saturday night for the Gladiators Fighting Series "Return of the Gladiators" Kickboxing show at Winnipeg, Manitoba's Transcona Country Club to witness what turned out to be the final fight for "The Godfather." In a stunning display, Winnipeg's own K-1 fighter and 2-Time ISKA North American Heavyweight Champion Giuseppe "The Godfather" DeNatale (who gave up 26 pounds, weighing in at 212 to Leo's 236), made short work of Atlanta, Georgia's Kelly Leo "The Lion" via KO early in Round 2. DeNatale, then announced that he is hanging up his gloves. This is the final chapter in his career and The Godfather went out in style. An impressive win, and a sad announcement. DeNatale has accomplished a great deal and is clearly the best standup fighter to ever come out of Winnipeg. Other great match-ups came through with the expected firepower and heavy artillery bombardment. Agostino "The Bull" DeNatale made his family proud with an impressive headkick knockout of Darren Kenny :26 seconds into the first round. In Agostino's last 2 bouts, the younger of the "Fighting DeNatale Brother's" has spent a total of :47 seconds in the ring after stopping his previous opponent :21 seconds into their match-up. Keep your eye on this kid, he is one "tough paisan," and a DeNatale. Mark Durant and Marc Bourgeois once again proved how tough Winnipegans can be with Durant narrowly getting the decision this time around. Then Adam Higson and Dave Zuniga went toe-to-toe as expected in a full force battle much like the scrap Durant vs. Bourgeois had moments earlier, with Higson getting the majority decision nod as Zuniga took the loss hard. As everyone in attendance could tell, Zuniga gave it all he had against a technically sound, hard hitting fighter in Adam Higson, who also brought his "A" game to the dance, as both of these fighters always do. Over 12 bouts will be featured including a much anticipated Gladiators Heavyweight Championship bout between Winnipeg's own 2-Time ISKA North American Heavyweight Champion Giuseppe "The Godfather" DeNatale, CKMTC (left) and Atlanta, Georgia's ISKA US Heavyweight Champion Kelly Leo "The Lion", Team Leo (right). Both are experienced, rugged K-1 fighters who are not afraid to bang shin-to-shin for a full 5 rounds. It's safe to say, someone's going down swinging in this donnybrook. DeNatale looks to fulfill his community service, vowing to be the lion killer, "I'm taking out a contract on the Lion. One of my punches, kicks or knees is going to give him an offer he can't refuse. You can take that to the bank!" Other bouts that are sure to produce their fair share of sparks include a few highly anticipated rematches. CKMTC's feisty Mark "Black Wolf" Durant takes on a very tough Marc "House of Pain" Bourgeois in a rematch of their memorable February 13, 2004 tussle in Winnipeg that Durant barely won on points. In another featured pairing, Winnipeg's "Dangerous" Dave Zuniga rematches Hamilton, Ontario's Adam "Road Warrior" Higson, who recently captured the Gladiators Fighting Series "King of the Middleweight Gladiators" title in Calgary June 4th on TSN. Zuniga beat Higson on points to capture the Gladiators series "Last Gladiators Standing" 8-man tourny title a few months earlier on February 19, 2005 in Winnipeg. Once again, this will be a another dogfight to the end. Truly a "last man standing" bout in the making. Good Ringside seats ($50.00) are still available, as are General Admission tickets ($25.00 in advance, $30.00 door) and may be reserved by calling (204) 772-2599. On a night which featured the return of one legend and a Hall-of-Fame induction of another, the rapidly growing Gladiators Fighting Kickboxing & MMA Series was back in the Milwaukee Ramada Convention Center's Grand Ballroom this past Friday night with it’s biggest show to date, "Colosseum Returns."
As has become expected, promoters Duke Roufus and Scott Joffe put together a first rate event that not only started on time, but delivered on what was an action packed and very entertaining fight card.
The "Awesome Amateurs" undercard featured several kickboxers with a promising future including hometown, Duke Roufus trained fighters Benni “The Albanian Jet” Izairi and Milwaukee’s own Kyle Monreal, who was also a major sponsor of the show, and Team Function's Andy Normington of Madison, (WI). In one of the most entertaining preliminary bouts Justin Abate, of Pekin Illinois was able to out strike Chris Trautsch of Prairie Du Chien, (WI) and earned a well deserved TKO victory in the late stages of the second round. In the featured preliminary fight, Rachid Maakoul of Rockford, Illinois put on a very impressive display of hand speed as he jabbed and hooked his way to a unanimous decision victory over Lansing, Michigan’s Henry Ebron.
With twelve fights still to come and the crowd now in full fight mode, it was time to bring on the big boys as Canada’s Damian “The Demon” Smektala (7-0) squared off with Roufus protégé Kyle “Wicked” Weickhardt who came in sporting his own impressive 5-1 record. Both fighters laid it on the line for the sold out crowd in an evenly contested match up. The Demon fired first with a series of low kicks which backed up Weickhardt early and set the tone for the rest of the fight. Weickhardt had his best round in the third and staggered Smektala with a series of punches and kicks late, but it wasn’t enough as Smektala earned a unanimous decision and kept intact his undefeated record.
Russell, who had made his MMA debut just one week prior, took on Milwaukee’s Ray Koeper and looked for his second win in two weeks. With an impressive display of power and speed the nineteen year old Russell opened the fight with a “Matt Hughes” like body slam that brought the crowd to its feet and sent an early message to his opponent at the same time. From that point on it was all Russell as he put Koeper away via strikes at under two minutes of the opening round. Russell, now 2-0 is a middleweight to watch for on future Gladiators' events. Next was a Kickboxing match-up of exciting lightweights featuring Nathan Smith (Los Angeles, CA) of the world renowned Team Voodoo lead by Gene Fields who took on Michigan’s Ben "Stoneman" Yelle as both fighters came in with identical 12-2 records.
Yelle, however, would not go quietly and showed off an impressive offensive arsenal of his own that included several quick high kicks that just narrowly missed their target.
Both warriors would pick their shots in a fight that saw everything from spinning backfists to five punch combinations, never for a second lacking in action. However, shortly after the bell rang to end round three, it was Smith (above with Team Voodoo and Referee Al Wichgers) who came away with the unanimous decision victory and improved to 13-2.
Caleb Krull put his undefeated MMA record (5-0) on the line against Peak Submission’s Chris Lee who looked to announce his presence in the welterweight division. Things started off in favor of Krull as an early take down led to several submission attempts, including an armbar and triangle from his guard.
In what was the night’s most interesting bout, Gladiators Fighting Series Kickboxing veterans Bryce “Bam Bam” Frank (Rockford, Ill) would take on Harold "The Hammer" Johnson of Milwaukee. It
is still unclear what Johnson was looking for as this match began,
but it certainly was not a clean fight.
The next bout featured the return of "Milwaukee's Kickboxing Ironman" Horace "The Real Deal" Craft (delivering a nice jab at right top, standing victorious below) as he took on Chuck Jewel in a Super Heavyweight bout. Jewell held his own against the more experienced Craft in the early stages, but was unable to stop a right hook which ended things in the second round giving the "Ironman" a thrilling win in front of a large legion of fans.
Ridenbaugh survived several early submission attempts by Friedland, but was unable to escape a rear naked choke late in round one. Friedland (left) improved to 7-1 with the win and is another Milwaukee fighter that could make some noise in the division. New Orleans native Pat “Get Hype” Barry lived up to his nickname as he took care of fellow K-1 veteran and Team Voodoo fighter Dustin “The Mechanic” Hanning (sporting a brightly colored head of bright magenta and blue hair) of Los Angeles, CA.
The smaller, but quicker Barry used both his hand speed and quick feet (landing the high kick at right) to neutralize any reach advantage Hanning might have had. With thunderous, axe like low kicks peppering Hanning's legs (left) spot on each time, Barry put his colorful opponent away late in round one and improved to 13-1 overall. After the fight, Barry addressed the appreciative crowd and thanked the fans of Milwaukee and New Orleans for their support. It should be noted that Barry recently relocated to Wisconsin after the Hurricane Katrina tragedy and is now training full time under Duke Roufus in Milwaukee. . In
one of the night’s co-main events, UFC Middleweight veteran
Adrian Serrano made his long awaited return to the ring after fighting
But get in the ring he did and Serrano pounded out a win over the very game Brandon Lee who suffered his first career loss. Serrano fought off an early surge by Lee (right) while controlling the fight on the ground, showing why he is a MMA champion and longtime Milwaukee favorite. Lee found himself on his back for most of the fight and was unable to get hold of Serrano’s solid forearms, which eventually prompted referee Al Wichgers to stop the fight and award Serrano a round two TKO victory. With over 100 career fights to his credit Serrano told fans in an emotional post fight speech that this was the biggest fight of his career considering everything it took for him to get to this point. Congratulations to Adrian Serrano…a true legend of the sport!
Prior to the main event, Gladiators Fighting Series co-promoter and 4-time Kickboxing World Champion Duke Roufus was quite humbled and surprised when he was presented (below left) with one of the sport's most prestigious honors as it was announced by former Kickboxer and Gladiators official Keith Cory that he was being officially inducted into Black Belt Magazine's Hall-of-Fame. A well deserved honor for one of the sport's true champions and ambassadors. MMA stars Nick Agallar and Stephan "The American Psycho" Bonnar, star of SpikeTV's hit reality show "The Ultimate Fighter - Season One" were also introduced to the crowd.
Ben “The Berzerker” Rothwell, fresh of his impressive victory headlining the Gladiators September 17th "Fight Nite in the Flats" Cleveland show, would clash with Team Voodoo’s mountain of man (6' 8", 266 lbs.) Justice Smith in the main event.
Smith could never really get things going against the more experienced Rothwell and was penalized several times for low blows. After the fourth foul, and against Rothwell’s (right) impassioned pleas to let the bout continue, referee Wichgers was left with no choice, but to stop the fight in the first round and disqualify Smith. While not the crash, bang, boom finish everyone was looking for, "Colosseum Returns" as a whole produced one fantastically exciting night of Kickboxing and MMA brawls. As all fans seemed to agree, seventeen bouts over five non-stop hours of action produced another impressive Gladiators Fighting Series show that delivered once again. Fight fans can expect more fireworks in early 2006 as the Gladiators Fighting Series features two huge shows in February with a return to Cleveland for a night of pro MMA action on a date yet to be announced and then back to Milwaukee for a special Ten Year Anniversary show entitled "X - A Decade In The Making" February 24th at the Ramada Convention Center. "King of the Gladiators - One" Tournament Champion Giuseppe "The Godfather" DeNatale, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and "K.O.T.G. - Two" Champion "Lightning" Mike Sheppard, Palestine, (WV), have agreed to meet in the show's highly anticipated Heavyweight "border war" main event. Tickets may be reserved now for this historic evening in Gladiators show history by calling Ad Cetera Sports at (414) 967-7767.

Complete "Colosseum Returns" Bout Line Up Photos: Greg Kalikas/PKW
Tomorrow night in Milwaukee he'll be put to the test when he gets into the ring with a mountain of a man (6' 8", 230 lbs) in the form of Justin "St. Justice" Smith of Los Angeles, California who was discovered at the August 2005 K-1 tryouts in Las Vegas. Smith is trained by Team Voodoo's Gene Fields who also is the trainer of 2002 K-1 USA Champion Carter Williams. Needless to say, Rothwell is sure to be bringing his "A+" game into the ring for this one. Gladiators Correspondent Greg Kalikas went one-on-one with the "Berzerker" to get his thoughts on his big upcoming bout as the featured main event on a 17 bout card scheduled for the Gladiators Fighting Series Kickboxing & MMA show "Colosseum Returns" Friday night, October 21st at the Milwaukee Ramada Convention Center (6401 S. 13th 414-764-5300). Doors open at 6:00 p.m., the main card starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets ($30.00 General Admission, Reserved $50.00 & $80.00 VIP Table) are available at the door. A very limited amount of reserved seats are available. Ben Rothwell Interview
BR: Training is going well. I have great training partners in Brad Imes, Tim Sylvia and Duke Roufus who have really helped get me ready to fight. I’m staying in shape and taking no breaks. I still have some time to continue to improve and will be ready to fight on October 21st. GK: Justin comes from a very reputable team in Team Voodoo, do you know allot about him? BR: Not a great deal. I saw him work out during the K-1 trials and for a big guy he looked good and should definitely not be taken lightly. Gene Fields is a good trainer and this should be a great fight. GK: How would you describe your style as a fighter? BR: I push the pace and am aggressive, but I’m getting smarter with my aggression. In my last fight in Cleveland, I felt I was able to control the pace of the fight, but still push the action. I am starting to learn how to control my aggression and be in control when I attack. GK: How do you expect this fight to go? BR: I think we are both going to come out with lots of energy, but I’m looking to finish the fight early and come out on top. GK: Do you have anything in the works past this fight? BR: Monte Cox is managing me now and I know he plans to keep me very busy with MMA, but I will try to get as many kickboxing fights in as I can to stay sharp. King of the Cage looks like a possibility for me in the near future and I’m sure I’ll be part of future Gladiator Fight Series events.
MMA will be featured prominently on this Friday's "Colosseum Returns" fight card to be held at Milwaukee's Ramada Convention Center Grand Ballroom (6401 S. 13th St.) starting at 7:30 p.m. Fifteen total bouts are currently scheduled for this standout card and tickets are going fast. Complete coverage from the event will be provided by “The Voice of the Fight Fan” ProKarateWeekly.com and SportsTalkNetwork.com. Excellent seats are still available and can be purchased by calling (414) 967-7767 or at the Duke Roufus Kickboxing, Boxing & MMA Academy, 111 West Virginia Street in Milwaukee (414) 319-1151. Two
local Milwaukeeans, Adrian
Serrano and Jon
Friedland, recently spoke with Gladiators Correspondent Greg Kalikas
about their upcoming appearances fighting on their home turf. Adrian Serrano Interview
AS: "I had a very serious infection which nearly cost me my leg that was tough to overcome and caused me to make some adjustments. It’s been hard getting back in to fighting shape but I am feeling good now and am ready to fight again." GK: As a veteran of the UFC, you have competed against some of the worlds top fighters and you’re coming in to this fight with over 40 career wins. How important is experience in this fight and in this sport? AS: "Very important but at this point in my career I plan to let it all hang out. I plan to fight with a sense of fearlessness like I did in my prime now that I’m finally healthy enough to fight. Milwaukee fans are in for a good show." GK: Do you feel like you can re-establish yourself as a force in the MW division? AS: "The last three months I’ve been training very hard to get ready for this and am feeling good about my chances but I’m not really worried about the future right now. I’m happy to be healthy and looking forward to fighting this month but I don’t see myself fighting that much longer." GK: What are your plans for the remainder of 2005? AS: "I have a tentative fight set for December right now, but past that I’m not sure. I want a few more fights so I can go out the way I want to and not because of an injury or heath reasons."
Jon Freidland Interview GK: You will be making your Gladiator Fighting Series debut on October 21st, what’s going through your mind as we get closer to the fight? JF: "I’m a little nervous but also very excited to be fighting in my home town for the first time ever. I have fought all over the country but never in Wisconsin and I can’t wait to show the fans what I can do. I’m use to being the bad guy everywhere I have fought so it will be nice to have the crowd support me for once." GK: Do you feel added pressure fighting in your front of your home town fans? JF: "Yeah, especially when I think about all of the sacrifices my friends and family have made so I can fight and train. I really want to win for them so I feel a little pressure." GK: The growth of MMA and the Gladiator Fighting Series has been rapid in Wisconsin. What do you attribute to that? JF: "The sport is finally getting some positive publicity from the media and newspapers in this region. Before it was all about how brutal the MMA was but now people are realizing that we are athletes just like any other sport and MMA is legitimate just like football and baseball. It wasn’t like that before." GK: Will you try to keep things standing or do you prefer to take your opponents to the ground? JF: "I’m a ground fighter so I will try to bring my opponent into my territory. It doesn’t guarantee me a win but I am more comfortable on the ground. I’ve been training allot on my stand up with Duke (Roufus) and I hope it works out that we can stand and exchange strikes but I’m prepared for anything." GK: What’s your prediction for this fight? JF:
"I try to visualize the way my fights will go but it usually
does not work out that way but for this fight I see it going to the
ground with me on the bottom. Hopefully I can pull out an armbar or
triangle and win the fight. Win or lose my goal on the 21st is to
put on a great show for the fans and make sure that I make BJJ look
good."
After being diagnosed with a pinched nerve in her neck, the popular female mixed martial artist decided it was best to rematch Case, whom Hicks lost to in June of this year, on the Gladiators Fighting Series 10th Anniversary show scheduled for Friday, February 24th in Milwaukee. Hicks is unsure when her physician will give her clearance to begin training again, buts anticipates she will have ample time to prepare for her February rematch with Case.
Milwaukee’s Ramada Convention Center Grand Ballroom will play host to a night of hard hitting Kickboxing and MMA action that’s sure to bring down the house. PKW’s Greg Kalikas caught up with some of the scheduled combatants
and spoke to them about their upcoming fights on October 21st. Here
is what Patrick Barry had to say: Pat Barry Interview
Things
are getting better which has allowed me to focus and I've realized
that I can't fight because I need to. I want to fight because I want
to fight and that will have a lot to do with my success. I am looking
forward to getting back in the ring." In one hour Duke will put on eight different personalities to get his point across to each individual fighter. Its been a great experience for me!" GK:
Do you feel that you are ready to take the next step as a top level
kick boxer? GK:
What type of fight do you expect this to be with Hanning?
The stars aligned just in time for new Gladiators Fighting Series Promoter Greg Kalikas as the rain stopped as hoped and his Gladiators MMA event "Fight Nite in the Flats" blew the collective roofs off the Scene Pavilion with an array of explosive, jam packed fights this past Saturday night along the river in Cleveland, Ohio's famed "Flats" entertainment district. Presented by McCarthy's Ale House, BetOnFighting.com and BetCris.com, the tight, slick production choreographed by Kalikas produced one of the bests nights of MMA fighting action in Cleveland ever. From the first bout on, the intensity level just kept rising. The location or the weather couldn't have been better, as the ultramodern outdoor (open, but covered) amphitheater provided the perfect backdrop for an amazing night of mixed martial arts fighting in "the cage." With temperatures in the mid 70's and a beautiful breeze blowing through, Kalikas took a gamble on Mother Nature and won. Led off by an "Awesome Amateurs" undercard that produced some sizzling exchanges, the crowd was treated to nothing but in your face, joint popping tap outs, toe-to-toe Thaistyle shin kicks, gut wrenching knee strikes and crisp, powerful punching. When these fighters went to the canvas they usually went down hard, the action never subsided though and eventually many of the bouts ended by arm bars and choke outs. The
Torrance "The Tyrant" Taylor vs. "Bad' Josh Barden
hard fought bout that rounded out the undercard perfectly set the
tone for what was to come on the pro side. Taylor and Barden faced
off in a mostly stand-up 3 rounder that saw Barden losing when the
referee stopped the bout midway through the 3rd round after Taylor
connected with Barden's right eye one punch too many. Barden was an extremely tough comer, but Taylor dished out a ton of punishment and after the bout, one could see that the Ohio State Athletic Commission referee made the right call because quitting wasn't an option for Josh Barden. Watch for both of these talented young guns on future Gladiators Fighting Series MMA shows as Taylor and Barden are two fighters to remember. The pro bouts definitely didn't disappoint on this night, as the show rolled on flawlessly paced by celebrity Ring Announcer and 4-Time World Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion Duke Roufus along with the organizational group led by Jake Digman and the Fight Nite crew who performed with military precision. The crowd got into the action all the way, but stayed off each other as no problems were reported by any of the many police who came out to watch and enjoy the show. The fighting in the cage was obviously too good to miss. The crowd was especially out in force and loud and proud for local favorites Jason "Dynamite" Dent and Jeff Cox. Fight Nite's Main Event between Ben "Berzerker" Rothwell and Allan Weickert lasted less than 1 round, but it was a tasty round if your diet consists of eating jabs and upper cuts with Rothwell serving as chef tonight. Weickert should be commended though for taking the fight in the first place as Rothwell towered over him by a good 6 inches and more than a few pounds. When Weickert went to the canvas for the last time, Rothwell unleashed a barrage of punches the rendered Weickert unable to sustain any more damage from Rothwell's bombardment and the referee stepped in to affirm the fact. Rothwell's flying knee that landed on a collapsing Weickert along the way helped seal the deal in the end. Weickert
did all he could and took it to Rothwell with a smile on his face,
never backing down. In the end Rothwell overwhelmed a All
of the planned celebrity appearances came off without a hitch, as
well, with stars Rich Franklin and George Gurgel from Spike TV's If Kalikas' Gladiators promotions keep going the way the first one went, Clevelanders with an appetite for great MMA are definitely in the right place at the right time as "Fight Nite in the Flats" was an overserving of one great MMA bout after another. The family's New Orleans East residence was destroyed by Katrina, and Pat (right), thinking that he'd have a house (and his belongings) to come back to after evacuating the city, left with only his clothes on his back, his automobile (the transmission blew five days ago in the midst of the evacuation) and an athletic bag full of his training equipment. Nothing more. That is what he owns today. Pat's mother Laverne and step-father Elwood Fleming, along with his sister Denise and brother Andrew, are living miles away out of a hotel room in Lake Charles, (LA). For now it's home, but the family has been turned upside down. No one has really had a chance to fully assess and realize the harsh, stark reality of the situation. It's one of those things people say "it's tough to get your whole mind around," even if you just lived through what is now being called the "worst natural disaster" in U.S. history.
Pat spent seven weeks training in Milwaukee and did indeed, on August 13th in Las Vegas, earn his first K-1 victory with a first round TKO over Atlanta, Georgia's Mark Selbee (who possesses a seven inch height advantage and the current IKF Super Heavyweight Kickboxing Title).
Feeling that the city now holds a special place in his heart as well, Pat decided to relocate to Milwaukee, saying he knew "this was the place (for me) to go, I just felt the warmth and knew." For now, Duke Roufus and his fiance Tami Brown have opened their home to Pat and many others have began asking what can they do to help.
